Richland County Woman Charged with Murder of Estranged Husband

According to recent reports, Rhonda James, 38, from Richland County has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of her estranged husband over the weekend.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said on Thursday morning that Rhonda was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder.

According to sheriff’s officials, Rhonda fatally shot her estranged husband, Joseph Lanard James, in the abdominal area on Saturday.

The fatal shooting occurred around 11 p.m. on the 2000 block of Smith Street, which is a bit off Shop Road near Interstate 77. According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, James died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

Rhonda was initially arrested on a charge of criminal domestic violence on Christmas Day in 2016, according to State Law Enforcement Division records. The record shows that she was convicted on a charge of third-degree assault and battery.

She faces up to life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.
