Jessica Kaplan, 31, a Mayflower High School art teacher was arrested on a charge of first-degree sexual assault on Tuesday.

According to the jail website, Kaplan was held in the Faulkner County jail. She was booked at 7:47 p.m.

The arrest came after Mayflower police declared it was investigating a report of “sexual contact” between a Mayflower High School teacher and a student. The department said it started looking into the report on Monday but did not release further details on the case.

According to the school website, this year was Kaplan’s first at Mayflower High School.

Kaplan was being held on $30,000 bail Tuesday night.

Under Arkansas law, first-degree sexual assault happens when a person “engages in sexual intercourse or deviate sexual activity with a minor” and is in a “position of trust or authority over the victim” or is an employee in the victim’s school or school district.
