Man wanted for Manchester killing arrested in Conn.

CONCORD — A man wanted for murdering Jonathan Vazquez-Ojeda, 25, last month in Manchester was arrested Friday morning in New Britain, Conn., by U.S. Marshals.

Billy Damuel Maldonado Cancel, 23, who was featured as a “Fugitive of the Week” on Sept. 28, was wanted on a Manchester Police Department warrant charging him with second-degree murder.

Maldonado Cancel allegedly was involved in an altercation at the intersection of Merrimack and Beech streets on Sept. 14 when he allegedly shot Vazquez-Ojeda, killing him.

Police asked the U.S. Marshals for help finding Maldonado Cancel after they had obtained an arrest warrant.

Investigators learned Maldonado Cancel was hiding in New Britain and Friday morning members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force from both Connecticut and New Hampshire, along with Homeland Security Investigations and New Britain police, took him into custody.

Maldonado Cancel was charged as a fugitive from justice by New Britain police and is being detained pending extradition to New Hampshire to face the murder charge.
