A 25-year-old man recently charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl now faces two counts of aggravated assault for allegedly attacking a sheriff’s officer and inmate while being taken to jail.
The man who is from Hoboken is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly hitting the sheriff officer on the elbow with his handcuffs and then punching her on Wednesday, the criminal complaint says.
The incident happened while he was being taken to the Hudson County jail in Kearny from the Hudson County Administration Building, according to an official.
He is likewise charged with aggravated assault on an inmate for allegedly slipping his handcuffs from the back to the front of his body and using them to hit the inmate several times on the back of the head, according to the complaint.
After his arrest on the sex charges, the state moved to detain him through the course of his prosecution. Notwithstanding, the detention hearing was moved after the Hoboken Housing complex resident was charged with the new offenses.
He made his first appearance on the new charges on Thursday in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City through a video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. At the hearing, a detention hearing for all the charges he faces was set on Wednesday before Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale.
On Wednesday, the man showed up in CJRC on charges that he sexually assaulted his stepbrother’s daughter when she was just 8 years old in 2016. According to officials, the allegations are that he put his hand behind the girls head and pulled it toward him during a sex act.
Investigators said that when the girl, who is now 10, was interviewed by investigators on May 31, she also portrayed another incident in which the man allegedly groped her when she was 9 years old.
He was charged with aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child and sexual assault by contact. Aggravated sexual assault is a crime of the first-degree and carries a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison upon conviction.
