A man with two past DUI convictions has been charged with the death of a woman and injuring three other family members after he allegedly crashed into a family of four while driving drunk in Irvine.
The murder charge, alongside with multiple DUI charges, was filed just days after the family was hit while out for a walk.
Kamal Attoh of Santa Ana was charged on Friday with second-degree murder and driving under the influence. It’s not clear whether he has a lawyer.
The crash occurred when Attoh was driving an SUV in an area near Ridgeline Drive and Turtle Rock Drive at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
His vehicle had veered off the road and onto a sidewalk, hitting the family of four before then continuing to drive down an embankment, prosecutors said. The SUV only stopped once it hit a tree.
According to prosecutors, Attoh had a blood-alcohol level of almost three times the legal limit when his BMW reeled off the road on Wednesday night and hit the family.
45-year-old Jeongmi Choi of Irvine was killed, according to prosecutors. Her husband was treated for a ruptured spleen and other severe injuries, her 18-year-old son had a broken nose and her 15-year-old daughter needed stitches.
Attoh could face 22 years to life in prison if convicted.
