Man Accused of Shooting at Deputies in Orangeburg Co. Arrested by Authorities

As indicated by the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office Facebook, Derian James, 18, of Orangeburg has been arrested by a task force. James’s arrest occurred around 2 p.m.

It was announced that James was wanted after shooting at officers on May 17.

According to Sheriff Ravenell of the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, Derian James is wanted on South Carolina Law Enforcement warrants accusing the Orangeburg man of shooting at officers during a warrant service.

Ravenell said a different person, Najquan Hampton, was being sought on multiple counts of attempted murder for an incident said to have occurred earlier in May.

In that incident, witnesses outside a Baxter Street residence reported being shot at by a person in a black vehicle.

US Marshal and Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office investigators were in the process of serving those warrants on Hampton at a Coleman Street residence on Thursday.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry expressed that at that point, the arriving investigators were then fired upon by another person who was immediately identified as James.

Hampton was not part of the shooting but was taken into custody without incident.
