Willie K. Franklin, 27, has been arrested by the police in connection with the killing of a woman, Lei Ala A., 30, in Lawrence.
He was arrested on suspicion of involuntary homicide and being a criminal possessing a gun, the Lawrence Police Department declared Monday morning on its social media websites.
Franklin was arrested in the 3600 block of Riverview Road but lives at an apartment near 25th and Iowa streets. He was booked into the jail about 12:30 a.m. and is being held on $100,000 bond, according to jail records.
The incident took place on Wednesday night at the August Place Apartments in South Lawrence.
At about 11:10 p.m., Police was dispatched to an apartment at 2310 W. 26th St., where the victim was found with a single gunshot wound to her chest. First responders tried to save her by through life-saving measures but she died from her injuries.
The police quickly sprang into action and by the next morning, they had identified a suspect and were trying to locate him but refused to share any information about him to the public. The “initial information” indicated that the shooting might have happened accidentally but did not further explain what the previous reports were.
The victim was not a resident at the apartment complex where she was killed, according to a woman who identified herself as the complex manager and other residents reported that they did not know her.
