A Virginia Beach man, Wallace Grove Godwin, 69, has been arrested for threatening to kill Congressman Scott Taylor (R-Va.).
Godwin went Rep. Taylor’s office in Virginia Beach on Thursday, according to court documents.
During a discussion about marijuana police, Godwin got frustrated and threatened to kill Taylor with the following statement:
“Scott is having an event this Saturday. I am going to get my shotgun and do something about this. I will just handle this myself.”
Godwin at that point pointed at two staff members in the room and said, “You two are next.”
The discussion between Godwin and those at Taylor’s office was about marijuana policy in the state of Virginia.
Rep. Taylor was a cosponsor of a bill last year that would end the federal prohibition of marijuana.
This is not Godwin’s first aggressive discussion with Rep. Taylor as in 2017, Godwin went to Rep. Taylor’s home and discussed with him outside the home. He additionally went to the Virginia Beach office once in the past and shouted at congressional staff members, according to court documents.
Godwin has been charged with threatening to murder and assault a United States official. His initial appearance was at the Norfolk federal courthouse Friday. He was given a public defender and will be in court on March 27 around 2:30 p.m. for a bond hearing.
If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
