Gardena Man Charged with Manslaughter After the Death of a Child in Fatal DUI Crash

A Gardena man has been charged with manslaughter on Tuesday after the death of a child who he fatally injured while driving under the influence of alcohol when he drove an SUV onto a South Los Angeles sidewalk. The child was walking with his mother when the incident occurred.

As indicated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, George Edward Milton Jr., 32, is set to be arraigned on Wednesday at the Compton courthouse on one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and driving with a 0.08 percent blood alcohol content causing injury.

The criminal complaint incorporates allegations that Milton caused severe bodily injury and was earlier convicted of arson of property in 2006.

Milton was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe that swerved off the road on 92nd Street near Figueroa Street, hit the boy on the sidewalk and then crashed into a house around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to Los Angeles police and prosecutors, who claimed that he at that point put the SUV in reverse and ran over the toddler a second time.

The victim, 2-year-old Eidan Cortez, died at a hospital.

Milton reportedly attempted to leave the area but was stopped by bystanders and then arrested by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, if convicted as charged, Milton could face up to 25 years in state prison.
