An ex-Mercer teacher, Richard Adsit Jr., who is charged with sexual assault appeared before Judge John A. Oldenburg in Montana’s 10th Judicial District Court, Judith Basin County on Monday for his arraignment hearing.
Adsit is charged with four counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual intercourse without consent regarding multiple alleged incidents while he was a teacher and basketball coach at Geyser High School in Geyser.
He is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old female student from April 19 to May 1, 2012. According to court documents, he was 36 years old when the crimes happened.
The Judith Basin County Sheriff’s Department claimed that Adsit told the victim to “never, ever, ever, ever, ever tell anybody what was going on,” according to court documents.
Adsit was employed by the Mercer Area School District about two and a half years ago and worked as a health and physical education teacher, as well as coach of the high school’s varsity basketball team, until he was arrested by the Mercer Police Department on May 24 at the high school.
At the time of Adsit’s arrest, Mercer Superintendent Dr. William Gathers said Adsit had passed all of the important background checks and the school board did not discover any complaints against him during the hiring process.
A substitute teacher took over Adsit’s teaching duties after his arrest until the school year ended, Gathers said.
Following the arraignment, Adsit was released on a $50,000 bond. An informal omnibus hearing is scheduled for July 24.
