A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while she was getting mail from her roadside mailbox.
The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Monday on Highway 212 in rural Newton County.
According to police, 57-year-old Melissa Radcliffe of Covington was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer and failed to stay on her lane, swerving off the roadway. The vehicle started to slide sideways before hitting Lori Spangler, 48, who was in her driveway after collecting the mail.
Spangler was trapped under the vehicle and had to be removed. She was declared dead on the scene.
Radcliffe had her two grandchildren in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. They were both safe.
Radcliffe is facing charges of DUI, endangering a child, homicide by vehicle-first degree, and failure to maintain lane.
