A police report has stated that a Sunday school teacher at Firstborn Baptist Church in Benson, North Carolina was charged in July with sexually assaulting a child.
Jonathan Young, 34, was charged with six counts of first-degree rape of a child, three counts of statutory rape, two charges of first-degree sexual offense, and two charges of indecent liberties to a child. Since his arrest, many people within the church have come forward calling the church a cult.
According to the Sherriff’s department in charge of the case, the case goes back over 14 years from 2003-2014. Three victims in the charges have been identified by police. The youngest victim was only seven years old, and Young stands accused of raping her at the church.
Different victims came forward which made the case to move forward. Various ex-members alleged abuse by Young for quite a long time. As indicated by former members, leaders inside the church were aware of the abuse and did nothing to stop it.
Since the arrest of Young, no less than seven former members have come forward to call out the church. The members reached out to the police to share their knowledge of the abuse. Also, they accused the church of being a cult.
In addition to the abuse members and children received by church leaders, the former members claimed they were aware of various children that had been molested by male leaders of the church for years. When families would challenge the male leaders, the leaders ejected them from the community. After members were ex-communicated from the church, leaders obligated members to cut off all connections with them.
Due to the information was given by the seven former members, the Sherriff’s department has extended their investigation. The former members claimed the church has been concealing the abuse since the 1980s. Investigators are presently looking at other leaders to determine if more charges will be filed.
Members who have left affirm the churches control and cover-up is evidence the organization is a cult.
Jonathan Young is being held on a $1 Million bond.
A court date has not been set yet.
